Puppy Assessment - Canine Behaviour 106 (GINT 0250)

Puppy Assessments: Understanding Developmental Temperament for Better Future Outcomes

Puppy testing has long been a topic of debate within the scientific community, as puppies are highly adaptable and undergo significant growth, not only physically but also mentally and emotionally. It is widely accepted that adult behaviours are shaped by a combination of genetic predisposition, the nurturing received throughout development, and learned experiences.

Puppy assessments provide valuable insights into a puppy’s instinctual responses, offering a glimpse into their early emotional and behavioural tendencies. These assessments allow professionals to gauge key factors such as general fearfulness, activity levels, excitability, sensory thresholds, and sensitivity to stimuli. Behaviour 106 – Puppy Assessments is designed to guide breeders, trainers, behaviour consultants, veterinary staff, animal care professionals, and prospective owners through the process of implementing a comprehensive puppy temperament test, based on methods recommended by Steven R. Lindsay, a renowned author in the field of applied dog behaviour and training. These methods help identify how individual puppies score in critical areas such as competitiveness, sociability, emotional reactivity, trainability, and adaptability to new environments.

This full-day course provides an in-depth walkthrough of the puppy assessment process, including setting up the appropriate environment, selecting the right tools, and effectively implementing the puppy profiling test from start to finish. Participants will gain essential skills in interpreting test results, allowing them to better identify the ideal home environments for each puppy and pinpoint areas where additional support may be needed to guide the puppy towards becoming a well-rounded, balanced adult dog.
