Canine Behaviour 102 Separation Anxiety (GINT 0196)

Separation-related disorders are among the most common and frustrating behavioral challenges faced by dog owners and professionals. If left unaddressed, these issues often escalate to serious and even dangerous levels. This course is designed to equip dog trainers, behaviour consultants, rescue workers, and dog owners with the tools and knowledge necessary to accurately distinguish between separation anxiety and separation frustration or boredom, identify the underlying causes, and develop effective treatment strategies.

In this seminar, we will provide clear, evidence-based approaches to recognizing and managing separation-related issues in dogs, with a strong emphasis on prevention. One of the core focuses will be identifying the early warning signs of separation anxiety before they escalate into more severe behaviours. Participants will gain insight into distinguishing between separation anxiety, frustration, and boredom—conditions that often present with similar symptoms but require different interventions. Understanding these distinctions is essential for creating accurate assessments and effective treatment plans. Additionally, the course will explore how to address the underlying causes of separation frustration and boredom, which are often triggered by insufficient mental and physical stimulation or inconsistent routines.

For dogs already exhibiting symptoms of separation anxiety, participants will learn to design individualized, humane treatment plans for mild to moderate cases. These plans will incorporate scientifically supported methods such as gradual desensitization, counterconditioning, and environmental management, all of which prioritize the dog’s emotional well-being while addressing the behaviour. The goal is to equip participants with the tools to prevent the onset of separation anxiety and to implement effective, compassionate strategies for managing and rehabilitating affected dogs.

This seminar will delve into topics such as:

  • Differentiating Between Separation Anxiety and Frustration
  • The Nature of Attachment and Separation in Dogs
  • Understanding the Truth Behind Separation Frustration
  • Key Insights into Separation Anxiety
  • Effective Treatment Options for Separation Disorders
  • Preventative Measures to Avoid the Development of Separation Anxiety
