CEFA – Canine Emergency First Aid (GINT 0146)

This full day, certified Canine Emergency First Aid course is geared towards teaching all individuals who work with dogs, everything they need to know to assist a dog in an emergency situation.  This First Aid course has been evaluated and recommended by many local veterinarians as a lifesaving tool for all dog owners, professionals and an excellent refresher course for Veterinarian Technicians.  In addition to teaching individuals how to identify injuries and illness in the early stages, this course provides participants with the necessary information and skills required to assist a dog in an emergency and improve their chances of surviving the transportation to the veterinarian.  This course includes hands-on practice with a live, trained seminar dog and a CPR dog mannequin, a summary exam and a certificate upon completion.

Part 1:

  • Design a homemade first aid kit
  • Recognizing signs of pain
  • Common canine diseases
  • Head to tail assessment
  • How to deal with poisonings
  • Major and minor burns
  • Hyperthermia response
  • Hypothermia response
  • Frostbite

Part 2:

  • Muzzling and restraining
  • How to read your dog’s vitals
  • Bleeding and bandaging
  • Impalements & chest wounds
  • Broken bones and splints
  • Shock management
  • Safe emergency transport
  • Canine CPR
  • Heimlich maneuver

The target audience for this course includes; Animal Control Officers, Canine Handlers, Veterinarian Technicians, dog trainers & behavioural consultants, breeders, groomers, doggy daycare attendants, dog walkers / pet sitters, foster parents for canine rescue groups and the average dog owner.  In addition to teaching individuals how to prevent and identify injuries and illness in the early stages, this course is designed to provide individuals who work and live with dogs the necessary information and skills they require to assist a canine in an emergency situation in order to improve that canine’s chances of surviving the transportation to the closest veterinarian for treatment.
